A day in the life – Factoring Services Officer
Colin MacLeod has worked for Highland Residential for the past 6 years, having previously worked as a Commerical Interior Designer for twenty five years. He has a wife, two dogs and three grown up children.
Colin tells us about a typical day in his role as Factoring Services Officer at Highland Residential.
Question 1:
What does an average day in your role look like?
I carry out proactive and reactive inspections and maintenance within the common areas remit on behalf of Albyn Housing Society and individual owners. This may involve having to instruct, direct and monitor the work of contractors and tradesmen acting within the common areas or common parts, such as a grounds maintenance team or a stair cleaning company.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?
I may also have to negotiate contracts with internal and external suppliers / contractors in order to achieve best value for money for the Group and its customers, and to communicate regularly with customers to ensure that they receive updates on their factoring service.
Additionally, I have to carry out monthly inspections, including risk assessments, and ensure that procedures are in place to minimise potential hazards and meet legislative requirements.
Essentially then, the biggest challenge nets the biggest reward; working on behalf of owners and the Society to provide a quality environment.
Question 3:
What do you like most about working at Highland Residential?
Probably the assortment of activities on a day to day basis. Being my own time manager, and travelling across the whole of the Highland Region.

What skills do you think are important to have to carry out the tasks in your role?
Pragmatism coupled with imagination and a desire to find solutions to unwelcome concerns.
Question 5:
What advice would you give someone looking to start a career in Factoring?
Be adaptable by being willing to learn about property legislation and management, maintenance and improvement, and the things that go with them such as accounting, contract management, and communication.
Question 6:
Outside of work, how do you spend your free time?
I paint in oils or acrylics depending on the style of the subject conveyed.
